The Blue Lagoon is a national treasure of Iceland, showing up as a must-do for tourists and consistently topping surveys for the best spa worldwide.
The Blue Lagoon is a six million liter lagoon filled with 1/3 freshwater and 2/3 seawater. The seawater is heated by a geothermal spring nearly 2000 meters deep, keeping the water temperature in the lagoon between 37-39°C / 98-102°F year round.
A fine-grained silica mud at the bottom of the lagoon gives it its surreal coloration. The mud is prized for its restorative properties. Bins of the mud are provided around the lagoon for patrons to use. The mud forms the base for their skin care products and is used in most of their treatments.
In addition to the lagoon, there is a sauna and two different steam rooms. Four bars and restaurants on the property, including the Lagoon Bar serving refreshments and energy drinks in the waters make this a whole day destination.
